Payment problems

You’re on the MATCH list. There is a path back.

A MATCH listing makes new merchant accounts harder — not impossible. The route back runs through disclosure, remediation and specialist underwriting.

What’s actually happening

MATCH (Member Alert to Control High-risk Merchants) is Mastercard’s database of merchants terminated for cause. Acquirers check it during underwriting, listings carry a reason code, and they generally persist for five years. Discovery is usually indirect: a termination followed by a series of unexplained declines.

The reason code matters enormously — excessive chargebacks reads very differently from fraud, and the remediation story that gets you processing again depends on which it is.

What to do right now

  • Get the facts from your former acquirer: confirmation of the listing and the reason code. They must tell you.
  • If the listing is factually wrong, pursue correction with the listing acquirer — the only party able to amend it.
  • If it is accurate, document the remediation: what caused it, what changed (controls, staff, products, descriptors), and the evidence.

How the group helps

Specialist underwriting through the network approves MATCH-listed businesses where the cause is disclosed, remediated and evidenced. The conversation is honest on both sides: reason code, history, controls, and which institutions will realistically serve you.

Expect adjusted terms initially — reserves and monitoring while history rebuilds — with reviews as clean processing accrues.

Realistic expectations

Anyone guaranteeing approval despite MATCH is lying to you or to their acquirer. What a serious provider offers is a fair read of your file and a realistic structure — that is what we do.

Frequently asked questions

How long will the listing follow me?

Generally five years from listing. Underwriting weighs recent history most, so remediation started today is worth more than waiting.

Should I just start a new company?

MATCH lists principals as well as businesses, and undisclosed connections discovered later are treated as concealment — the one unforgivable underwriting sin. Disclose and remediate instead.

Does MATCH affect bank accounts too?

No — it is a card-acquiring database. Business accounts on the e-money side are underwritten separately.
