Payment problems

Stripe froze your account. Here’s what to do.

A freeze usually means Stripe’s risk systems flagged your account — often with funds held and payouts paused. It is recoverable, and it is survivable.

What’s actually happening

Stripe, like every payment platform, continuously re-scores accounts against its risk policies — sector, chargeback ratio, sudden volume changes, customer complaints. A freeze or reserve is Stripe applying its own terms of service, not an accusation: aggregated platforms onboard instantly by underwriting lightly up front and policing hard afterwards.

UK businesses in specialist sectors are disproportionately affected, because aggregators apply global sector policies that don’t distinguish a licensed UK operator from an unlicensed one elsewhere.

What to do right now

  • Respond to Stripe’s information requests completely and fast — most holds resolve or conclude via that process, and silence extends it.
  • Read the notice carefully: a rolling reserve, a payout pause and a termination are different outcomes with different timelines (funds after termination are typically held around 90–120 days against chargebacks).
  • Export your data now — transaction history, customer records, dispute evidence. You will need it for Stripe’s review and for any new provider’s underwriting.
  • Do not open a second Stripe account to route around a freeze — it breaches their terms and makes the record worse.

How the group helps

A dedicated merchant account through the group is underwritten up front — your sector, history and controls assessed before you process, so the account is built to stay open rather than policed after the fact.

Underwriting reads your Stripe history honestly: a freeze with a clean explanation and evidence is workable. You can be live in as little as 7 days, subject to all relevant documentation.

Realistic expectations

We cannot release funds Stripe holds — only Stripe’s process does that. What we can do is get compliant businesses processing again on infrastructure underwritten for their sector, so the next freeze doesn’t happen.

Frequently asked questions

Will Stripe give my money back?

Usually yes, on their timeline: held funds are typically released after the reserve period (often around 90–120 days post-termination) once chargeback exposure has run off. Follow their process and keep records.

Was the freeze illegal?

Almost certainly not — platforms apply reserves and freezes under the terms you accepted. The productive question is not fault; it’s getting infrastructure that matches your risk profile.

Will a Stripe freeze stop me getting a merchant account?

No, if it’s disclosed and explained. A freeze is not a MATCH listing. Concealing it is what gets applications declined.
