What is a MID (merchant ID)?

A MID (merchant ID) is the unique identifier an acquirer assigns to a merchant account. Every transaction you process carries it, the card schemes track your history against it, and your rates, reserves and chargeback ratios are all accounted at MID level.

Why the MID matters

Your MID is your processing identity. Scheme monitoring programmes measure chargeback and fraud ratios per MID; underwriting decisions reference the history attached to it; and a terminated MID is what puts a business on the MATCH list.

That is why serious providers care about descriptor clarity, refund practice and dispute ratios from day one — they are protecting the asset your business processes through.

One MID or several?

Multi-market businesses often run several MIDs — per region, per product line, per currency — so that performance is measured (and priced) where it belongs. What matters is that the structure reflects genuine business lines: schemes explicitly prohibit spreading one business across MIDs to dilute a bad ratio, a practice known as load balancing to evade monitoring.

A provider structuring MIDs for you should be able to explain the legitimate purpose of each one. If the pitch is “more MIDs to hide the chargebacks”, leave.
